What is Walk Hard?
Walk Hard is a 160 mile hike from Allendale, MI to Traverse City, MI. The idea was adopted from the Kappa Beta Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega down at Troy University. Just as last year, brothers will sacrifice their spring break, a span of 8 days, to battle the Michigan winter. Aided by a support team and warm churches to sleep in, the brothers will be testing their will to fight for a cause greater than themselves.
Why Walk Hard?
During the initial planning of this event, brothers began to brainstorm potential philanthropies. During our research we found that many brothers were closely connected with the terrible disease that is Multiple Sclerosis and it was without hesitation, we chose the Multiple Sclerosis Society. It was from that point forward brothers began to dedicate countless hours in planning ATO Walks Hard.
What is MS?
Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. More than 2.3 million people are affected by MS worldwide. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not require U.S. physicians to report new cases, and because symptoms can be completely invisible, the prevalence of MS in the U.S. can only be estimated. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease; however there is currently NO CURE.
Important Dates:
February 23rd -26th: MS Awareness Week at GVSU
February 26th: ATO Walks Hard Kickoff Event @ GVSU Kirkhof Center
March 5th: Walks Hard Team arrives in Traverse City, MI
